Burnout has a picture in our heads: someone collapsed, unable to go on. The real thing is usually quieter and easier to miss.
It shows up as a flatness. The work still gets done, but the meaning has drained out of it. Small things irritate more than they should. The things you loved feel like chores.
The early signs
- You are getting through, but not enjoying anything.
- Rest does not restore you the way it used to.
- You have stopped reaching out to people.
None of these are dramatic, which is exactly why they slip past. Naming it early is half the work. You cannot tend to something you refuse to see.
