Rest Is Not a Reward You Earn

We treat rest like something to be deserved. What if it were simply something we need?

We have quietly agreed, most of us, that rest has to be earned. Finish the list, hit the target, get through the week, and then, maybe, we are allowed to stop.

But the body was never built to run on that logic. Rest is not the prize at the end of productivity. It is the ground productivity stands on.

The cost of the story we tell

When rest is conditional, it never quite arrives. There is always one more thing. And so we carry a low, constant tiredness that we have learned to call normal.

You do not have to be running on empty to deserve a pause.

Try this instead: rest before you are wrecked. Not as a treat, but as maintenance. A walk with no phone. Ten minutes where nothing is required of you. It feels indulgent only because we have forgotten it is ordinary.

The week will still be there. You will meet it better having stopped.
