A study published in mid-July 2026 by researchers at the University of Bristol, Nesta and Amsterdam UMC found that loneliness and social isolation are linked to poorer mental health and reduced wellbeing, with loneliness also tied to worse general health. The findings are summarised by the University of Bristol.

Loneliness is not a character flaw. It is a signal, the way hunger or thirst is a signal.

What to do with it

The research is a reminder that connection is not a luxury layered on top of wellbeing. It is part of the foundation. One honest conversation this week, with someone who matters, counts for more than we tend to admit.

This is a sensitive topic. If you are struggling with loneliness or low mood, reaching out to a trusted person or a professional is a real and worthwhile step.
